DON’T
-
do all your laundry in one day.. .space it out
-
put a lot of water into the system all at one time.. .use the water
sparingly and teach children to do the same
-
allow excess amounts of fat or grease to enter the system - it can congeal
and cause obstructions
-
flush down paper towels or other heavy matter
-
use chemical compounds, or septic tank “cleaners”-they do not improve the
bacterial process and some may actually retard it
-
use large amounts of laundry soaps, detergents, bleaches, drain
cleaners-recommended quantities should not adversely affect the
system-liquid soap is best
-
discharge from any water treatment should not go into the septic system
DO
-
educate your family to proper use of the system
-
check for faucet leaks.. .it is estimated that one leaky faucet can waste as
much as 700 gallons of water a year
-
set-up and adhere to a sound system of inspection and cleaning
-
if tank is more than a foot below the ground level, simplify inspection and
cleaning by installing a riser/manhole just below ground level. State code
effective April 10th 2000 requires riser installation on tank access cover
if tank is deeper than 12" below ground surface.
-
do inspect outlet baffles because they are important as they stop the solids
from entering the leach fields
-
keep accurate records about locating and cleaning of system in the permanent
house file so this information can be passed on to the next owner
